(The story continues....) I snapped a few photos for this page and Phyllis opened the can that I'd refrigerated (so she could push out the butter like she pushed out the canned cheese when we were first trying it. (Ha! Already we've established a family tradition!) In real life, you'd open just one end of the can and use your butter knife to remove what you need. (The cans don't come with lids, but we have them for 25 American cents plus shipping.)

She pushed the wheel of butter out of the can and buttered both halves of the Almond Poppy Seed Muffins that came out of the oven an hour earlier (man, are they good!) and we set up the photo.

I rushed into the office to make sure there was at least one good shot of each canned butter photo pose (there was) and raced back to devour the muffin. (Excuse me, I meant one-half of the muffin. You-know-who got the other half!)

Right then and there I was sold on New Zealand canned butter! It was great. It is great! Smooth and creamy, as good a butter as I've ever tasted . . . and who cares if the electricity goes off?? I've got real canned butter in the cupboard (along with real canned cheese and real canned meats). And then, there's the battery backups . . .

Electrical outage, I laugh at you! (Just kidding, OK? Keep running as long as you can!)

Phyllis fixed me a grilled cheese sandwich with it (bless her heart!) and she made herself a piece of toast with it. They were great, just like good ol' American butter. Maybe better. (It's a shame those good ol' American dairies don't can butter.) I'm not a butter connoisseur. Just never had time to develop the palate for it. But we switched to using only American butter for the last two years (meaning that we don't do margarine anymore). It tastes exactly the same to me. It more yellow in color than the butter we've been buying, but maybe that's because of the brand we've been using. (If you know what makes some butter more yellow than others, . There's been no food coloring added, according to the label.)

Speaking of the label, the ingredients read: Pasteurized Cream, Salt. Sounds pretty pure to me. (The label on the American butter we buy says simply " Cream, Salt." ) Elsewhere on the label we're instructed to "Store in a cool place" and "Refrigerate unused portion in a separate container." That's probably a good idea, but we haven't done it in the two+ years we've been using American butter. Phyllis leaves it out on the counter. We'll do the same with this canned butter. (If changes stop occurring on this website, and it's eventually taken down due to non-payment, you'll know that it wasn't a good idea not to refrigerate New Zealand Canned Butter . . . .)

The Nutrition Facts are a little different between our American Butter and the canned butter. Serving sizes are the same, one tablespoon. Here's a side-by-side comparison:

Cans contain 12 oz of butter which works out to three traditional sticks of butter.

Just like our canned cheese, which will store indefinitely, no one knows just how long this canned butter will store. They're telling us "indefinitely." As with any storable food, the cooler you can keep it, the longer it will last on the shelf. (We've eaten it 3-years-old.) This is the ideal product to store on your boat or yacht to take with you sailing. Or to take with you camping. It's ideal to have on hand to prevent an extra trip to the grocery or corner store when you run out of non-storable butter.
